A Short Trip from Guwahati to Meghalaya

A Short trip from Guwahati to Meghalaya

Very often, we find ourselves unable to plan for an extended trip, yet we yearn to travel somewhere on the weekend. The initial thought that crosses our minds is that of a short trip, perhaps a visit to the market, mall, café, restaurant, or a friend’s home. Confusion often arises when deciding on a one-day excursion that is truly worthwhile.

Recently, my friend and I finally planned a short trip from Guwahati to Meghalaya. Seeking ideas and opinions, I consulted a few friends on what essentials we should carry to make the most of our one-day exploration. Following their suggestions, we crafted an itinerary and set out on our journey. To make the most of our exploration, we decided to start the day early. We woke up at 4 am, got ready by 5 am, and set off at 5:30 a.m. Although the vehicle was mine, I opted not to drive for the long journey and instead opted for the services of a known driver who charged 1500 for the entire day. The journey proceeded smoothly, with well-maintained highways and roads creating a pleasant experience, amplified by the tranquil winter weather. At the start of our journey, the temperature in Guwahati was around 16 degrees, while in Shillong, Meghalaya, it registered at 5 degrees. However, as the morning progressed, the temperature rose to 13 degrees in Shillong. The drive took approximately two and a half hours, and thanks to our early departure, we avoided encountering any traffic jams.

On a one-day tour to Meghalaya, you can cover the following places:

We managed to explore all the places mentioned in a single day. To cover such a range of destinations in a limited amount of time, we had to spend less time at each spot. Our energy levels remained high, allowing us to explore with enthusiasm. While our driver took short naps during our stops, we didn’t make any extended restaurant visits. Instead, we brought hot milk tea, disposable cups, snacks, chocolate bars, biscuits, and convenient cup noodles from home. Additionally, we packed some fresh oranges and apples.

To be prepared for unforeseen circumstances, we also carried extra clothes, anticipating a potential one-night stay in a hotel if we couldn’t complete the trip as planned or if it got too late and dark. Fortunately, we didn’t need the extra clothes, and we successfully completed our self-crafted itinerary. We reached home around 10:30 at night, feeling completely exhausted.

Let me give some more details on our trip

Umiam Lake is truly beautiful, and if you have more time to spare, there are water sports options available. Unfortunately, we were in a hurry, but if you decide to take your time, motor boating is a great option. During the ride, you’ll pass by mini-islands and have the opportunity to appreciate the scenic beauty of the place.

Afterward, you can head to the Don Bosco Museum, which opens at 9 a.m., and the tickets cost around 200. Personally, I never miss visiting a museum when I explore a new place. Museums play a crucial role in understanding the essence of a location, offering insights into its traditions, food, lifestyle, history, and more—especially when time is limited. This museum showcases the history of all the Northeastern states and is beautifully maintained. Feel free to capture pictures adhering to the rules and guidelines, stroll around, and savor the captivating views.

Next, we headed to Elephant Falls, which is 12 km from the Don Bosco Museum. The entry ticket is 100 for each person. It’s not just a waterfall; there are stalls where you can buy souvenirs and other items. Nearby, there are hotels where you can enjoy momos and noodles. The public washrooms are well maintained—not exceptionally clean, but on average. The waterfall is two-tiered, and you have to walk downstairs. Climbing back up might be a bit tiring, but it’s manageable.

After that, we headed to the Mawpflang Sacred Forest, which was a 24-minute drive. This is an 800-year-old forest covering an area of 200 acres. This sacred forest is intricately connected to the spiritual beliefs of the Khasi people. I have written another blog on the Mawpflang forest; you can read it by clicking on the link.

After that, we quickly headed to Laitlum Canyon, which was a 1-hour drive. Fortunately, the road was clear, and we arrived on time. However, the weather was quite foggy, preventing us from enjoying a perfect view. We plan to visit again for a clearer experience. The ideal time to explore is in the afternoon during the winter season, as mornings and evenings tend to be foggy. For a scenic view, consider planning your visit during the monsoon season.

Due to the early winter sunset, we couldn’t spend much time there. We took a detour and made a stop at Police Bazaar, a famous shopping spot. Despite the peak evening traffic, we managed to explore a bit, picking up some knick-knack items for the household. My friend also found some winter clothes at a reasonable price. Finally, we headed back home.

Lastly, I would honestly say that the trip was exhausting yet satisfying. It was worth it. Everything went as planned. The irony is that when we came back, we noticed all our snacks were finished. It was the first time that we completed all our snacks. It was tiring, but everything was worth it.
